ABB 216DB61 Tripping Output Unit for Generator Protection
The ABB 216DB61 Tripping Output Unit for Generator Protection is a protection-interface module built for the REG216 / REC216 digital generator protection and control system. It acquires external binary signals from field auxiliary relays while executing tripping commands issued by the processing unit over the B448C parallel bus.
Key Features
1.16 binary input channels and 8 tripping output channels per unit
2.Inputs routed through the 216GE61 auxiliary relay module (potential-free contacts)
3.Fail-safe output architecture: outputs split into two groups (1/3/5/7 and 2/4/6/8); a driver short-circuit disables only the affected group
4.Software-configurable ENABLE / BLOCK tripping logic via on-board jumper BR1
5.Front-panel LEDs: ALARM, CH IN (inputs), ENABLE, BLOCK, CH OUT (trip channels)
6.Plug-in module, 1 standard division (1T) width, for 216MB66 equipment rack

Installation Notes
1.Insert the 216DB61 into a vacant slot on the 216MB66 equipment rack; the B448C bus connector engages automatically at the rear.
2.Verify the BR1 jumper position before power-up: X4 disables ENABLE/BLOCK logic (CHI13–16 act as normal inputs); X3 enables the two-channel AND-enable / OR-block trip interlocking.
Field signals enter via the 216GE61 input relay module — do not wire field contacts directly to the 216DB61.
3.Tripping commands leave via the 216GA62 tripping relay module; confirm CH OUT LEDs correspond to the configured protection functions.
4.On ALARM LED, check FA0 (output driver defect), FA1 (trip relay supply failure), or FA2 (bus data error) per the service manual.
Common Questions
1.How is this unit different from the 216AB61?
The 216AB61 is a binary output / signalling unit (status signals to remote indication), while the 216DB61 combines binary inputs with power tripping outputs that directly operate the 216GA62 trip relay chain.
2.What do the ENABLE and BLOCK inputs do?
When BR1 is set to X3, both ENABLE inputs (CHI13, CHI14) must be present for all 8 trip outputs to be active; either BLOCK input (CHI15, CHI16) will immediately disable them. This provides external trip permit / trip inhibit interlocking.
3.Can I add more I/O channels by stacking units?
Yes. A single rack supports up to 4× 216DB61 units, scaling trip outputs from 8 up to 32 channels across the system, with channel numbering assigned by rack and slot position.
